Englis Language info

What is language?
Language is a system that uses some physical sign (sound, gesture, mark) to express meaning.
6 properties of language:
DAP CT DD
Displacement    arbitrariness       productivity        cultural transmission      duality  discreteness     
Syntax = rules for sentence formation
Semantic = study of meaning
Phonology = study of sound system
Morphology = study of word formation
Homophony = single sound, different meaning
Hyponymy = meaning of part of a concept
Figurative language is a language that is used to describe something by comparing it with something else.
Polysemy = same spelling different meaning (related to each other)
Homophony = same sound different meaning
Homograph = same spelling different meaning
Paraphrase = 2 sentence with same meaning
Entailment = sentence nearly the same
Contradiction = different meaning
Figurative expression = comparison
Morphem = smallest unit that carry meaning
Affix = morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word.
Prefix = affix in front of a stem of word.
Suffix = affix at the back of stem of word
Infixes = affix at the middle of stem of word
Circumfix = affix surround the stem of word. Eg : international
